Making a planned gift to Nipissing means planning a charitable donation in advance to leave a legacy for future generations.
The reasons for making a planned gift are very personal. Whether it’s to support your community, to ensure the values that matter to you and your legacy lives on, or to pay it forward, this type of giving has a lasting impact on the Nipissing community, today and for generations to come.
There are many planned giving options that can help you maximize your social impact and tax benefits, while balancing your personal and financial needs.
A charitable bequest to Nipissing is a gift made through your will that is distributed by your estate. Bequests can be a dollar amount, a specific asset, or as a percentage or the remainder of your estate, and can be designated for a specific purpose at Nipissing University.
The University will issue a charitable receipt for the full value of the bequest, which will result in a tax credit that will offset taxes owing on your final tax return.
Benefits of Leaving a Bequest:
A gift of life insurance enables you to make a significant and generous contribution to Nipissing University at a modest monthly or annual cost, while benefiting from valuable tax benefits. You can donate through either a new or existing insurance policy.
Gift of Life Insurance Options:
You can name Nipissing University as the beneficiary of your Registered Retirement Savings Plan (RRSP) or Registered Retirement Income Fund (RRIF). Once your needs and those of your loved ones have been taken care of, you can donate registered assets such as a Registered Retirement Savings Plan or a Registered Retirement Income Fund to create a legacy that will benefit Nipissing University and effectively reduce the taxes payable by your estate.
By naming Nipissing as a beneficiary, you retain the ownership and use of the funds during your lifetime. You can also amend your beneficiary if your circumstances change in the future. Due to recent tax changes, you no longer need to designate beneficiaries through a clause in your will.
A Nipissing Gift Annuity allows you to make a significant gift to Nipissing University, while reducing money management worries and enjoying income for life that is largely tax free. An annuity is an irrevocable gift that benefits donors over the age of 65 who may want an alternative to leaving a bequest to simplify the estate process and save probate and other estate fees in the future.
You can donate securities directly to Nipissing University to eliminate the capital gains tax on your investments. To avoid paying capital gains tax, the securities must be transferred directly to Nipissing University by a broker and not cashed first.

Dr. John Long’s career as an educator and researcher took him across the country, but the Mushkegowuk people and Treaty 9 territory held special place in his life and work. For this reason, he established the Treaty No. 9 Bursary which supports students who are pursuing research in partnership with an Indigenous community located within the Treaty No. 9 region.
Tragically, Nipissing lost a dear friend, colleague, and educator when Dr. Long passed in March 2016. It was Dr. Long’s wish that a portion of his estate be devoted to supporting Treaty research and helping students along their educational journeys. By leaving a bequest, Dr. Long’s legacy at Nipissing may live on through this special bursary.
